From 1945 to 1989, relations between the communist East German state and the Catholic Church were contentious and sometimes turbulent. Drawing on extensive Stasi materials and other government and party archives, this study provides the first systematic overview of this complex relationship and offers many new insights into the continuities, changes, and entanglements of policies and strategies on both sides. Previously undiscovered records in church archives contribute to an analysis of regional and sectoral conflicts within the Church and various shades of cooperation between nominal antagonists. The volume also explores relations between the GDR and the Vatican and addresses the oftneglected communist church business controversially made in exchange for hard Western currency.

When I received the book, the cover was a bit scuffed, which was disappointing. However, the content itself is excellent! The studies give a solid understanding of the Catholic Church's interactions with the state during a turbulent time. Just wish the delivery had been better.

A Thorough Examination of a Unique Topic
This book dives deep into the relationship between the East German state and the Catholic Church from 1945 to 1989. The thorough research and insightful analysis really brought a unique perspective on a less-discussed part of history. For anyone interested in German history or religious studies, this is a must-read!

A Unique Historical Perspective
As a history buff, I really appreciated this book's focus on the Catholic Church's role in East Germany. It offers perspectives that aren't often covered in standard history textbooks. Highly informative and engaging!

Informative but Dense
The studies presented in this volume are incredibly detailed, but I found some parts to be a bit dense and hard to follow. It definitely provides great insights into the political dynamics of the era, though. Just be prepared for a challenging read!

Great Resource for Research
I bought this for my thesis on the Church's influence in East Germany, and it has been invaluable! The depth of information is impressive. My only complaint is that the indexing could be clearer, which made it a little cumbersome to find specific references.
