Evans was a pilot who crashlanded in enemy territory. After two escapes he was moved to Fort 9, Ingolstadt, where the Germans had collected all the naughty boys who had escaped from other camps. In summer 1917, Evans finally succeeded in his escape with a fellow officer and the book describes the hardship and journey to freedom in Switzerland.
