An Ancient Collection ReimaginedComposed around the Buddhas lifetime, the original Therigatha (Verses of the Elder Nuns) contains the poems of the first Buddhist women: princesses and courtesans, tired wives of arranged marriages and the desperately in love, those born into limitless wealth and those born with nothing at all. The authors of the Therigatha were women from every kind of background, but they all shared a deepseated desire for awakening and liberation. In The First Free Women, Matty Weingast has reimagined this ancient collection and created an original work that takes his experience of the essence of each poem and brings forth in his own words the struggles and doubts, as well as the strength, perseverance, and profound compassion, embodied by these courageous women.

I was really looking forward to this poetry collection but the print quality was poor. Some pages were smudged and it took longer than expected to arrive. Not the best purchase I've made.

Not What I Expected
Honestly, I expected more from this book based on the description. While the poems are lovely, I found the flow a bit hard to follow sometimes. I think it could use a bit more background on the nuns themselves for better context.

A Beautiful Collection of Poetry
I really enjoyed reading 'The First Free Women'. The poems are deeply moving and really capture the essence of the early Buddhist nuns. It’s a great way to learn more about their lives!

Thought-Provoking Read
This collection of poems is quite unique. I appreciated the insights into the lives of the early Buddhist nuns, but some poems felt a bit abstract for my taste. Still, it’s a worthwhile read if you enjoy poetry with historical context.
