The French State in Question places the idea of the state back at the heart of our understanding of modern French history and political culture, and challenges accepted views of the Third Republic as a weak state. At its core is an examination of a central problem in French politics of the belle epoque: Should the employees of the state have the right to unionize, and to strike? The book examines this as a problem of intellectual history: it seeks to explain why this was such an intractable question, and does so by demonstrating the importance of legal theory and the idea of the state in French political culture.

This book offers valuable insights, but I found some sections to be a bit tedious. The analysis is solid, though, and it’s a good read if you're into political theory. Just don’t expect a fast-paced narrative.

Interesting perspective on French politics
I really enjoyed 'The French State in Question'. It dives deep into the complexities of French governance that I never considered before. I bought it for my political science class, and it sparked some great discussions!

Not what I expected
I was looking for something more contemporary. 'The French State in Question' mainly focuses on historical aspects, which was a little disappointing for me. The writing is good, but it didn’t meet my needs.
