This historically organized introductory text, which begins with Hesiod and goes up to Derrida and Quine, presents philosophy as an ongoing conversation about humankinds deepest and most persistent concerns. The Great Conversation traces the exchange of ideas between historys key philosophers, demonstrating that while constructing an argument or making a claim, one philosopher almost always has others in mind. The book is also available in two volumes: Volume I covers Hesiod through Descartes (Chapters 113); Volume II includes Moving from Medieval to Modern (Chapter 12), and coverage of Descartes through Derrida and Quine (Chapters 1325).

This book is a decent introduction to philosophy, but I found some chapters a bit dense. It covers many important thinkers, yet the layout could be more engaging. Still, it’s a solid read for someone new to the field!

Great for classroom discussions
I use this 4th edition for my philosophy lectures, and it sparks some great discussions among my students. The historical introductions help them relate to the philosophers better. It’s a valuable addition to my teaching materials!
