Product Description A discussion of the international problem of drug smuggling is enhanced with statistics and photographs to show the extent governments will go to to fight a vast illegal market From School Library Journal ea. vol: 32p. diags. maps. photogs. chron. index. (Issues Series). Gloucester Pr, dist. by Watts. 1986. PLB $10.40. Grade 59 Hawkes traces the story of the heroin trail from the field to the grave'' in a hardhitting account accompanied by many large, captioned color photographs. This oversized book graphically depicts the ruination caused by heroin addiction. From the poppy fields of Southeast Asia and the Golden Crescent including Afghanistan and Pakistan, through the production process to the smuggling to large urban areas, culminating in street sales, the story unfolds. The 4000 b.c. to 1986 chronology capsulizes the history of the opiate, and statistics for Britain, Europe, and the U.S. provide helpful comparisons. This large print book with simple text in shortchapter format will serve as a useful overview of the heroin story. The riveting photographs, however, make the most cogent statement. In The Palestinians , McDowall describes the historical competition for the same area of land by Israeli Jews and the Palestine Arabs. This centuriesold struggle is explored, as are the partitioning by the U.N. in 1947, the subsequent dispossession, life in refugee camps, and exile for many. Beautifully illustrated with color photography and graphics, the book provides an overview of the seriousness and complexity of the bitter conflict and resulting mistrust on each side. Appended is a 20thCentury chronology of the dispute and descriptive passages about the various factions of the PLO. It is not as balanced or as well researched as Raymond Carroll's The Palestine Question (Watts, 1983), but will serve as an introduction to the topic in a more easily read format than William Spencer's The Islamic States in Conflict (Watts, 1983) or the more comprehensive The Middle East (Greenhaven, 1982).
