From School Library Journal YA This excellent work rectifies the misunderstandings of those who think that American history begins with the Pilgrims, thus forgetting the tremendous Spanish influence on this nation. Originally published in Spanish, it can be described as half historical reference, half modern almanac. The first section gives an overview of Spanish discovery and influence, discussing how Hispanic traditions helped to shape the national character. The second part is a statebystate survey of these influences. Although the material is detailed, it is interesting and easy to understand. The precise index will be well used as the text is divided into broad topics of discussion. The appendixes pull together a variety of data that is not readily available elsewhere. This quality volume provides insight into one of the many cultures whose presence is widely felt in schools today. Sylvia Kladakis, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VACopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description Recounts the Spanish colonization of America, examines Hispanic influence on American literature, music, architecture, and art, and lists Hispanic associations From Library Journal This is a translated, abridged, and updated version of the second edition of Presencia Espanola en los Estados Unidos , written by the former Spanish Consul General in Miami and originally published by Cooperacion Iberoamerica in Spain in 1987. This book traces the history and continuing Spanish influence in each state. Greater emphasis and separate chapters are devoted to states with a large Hispanic presence or those formerly administered by Spain. The regional section is preceded by a lengthy introduction to Spain's role in U.S. history: exploration, colonization, religion, culture, economy, and the law. Useful appendixes list Spanish colonial officers, missions, forts, historical societies, media, and periodicals. There is an intriguing list of Spanish "firsts." A useful contribution that serves as a corrective to standard American accounts. Brian E. Coutts, Western Kentucky Univ. Libs., Bowling GreenCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
