It traces how ideas developed and how philosophers influenced each other.Written by Mauricio Beuchot, the foremost scholar of the philosophy of colonial Mexico, it is the first study in English to examine this extraordinarily long and productive period in the intellectual history of the West. Divided into four parts that correspond to each of the centuries studied, the book provides an extensive account of the different schools of thought, and the most important religious philosophers within them.Beuchot discusses sixteenthcentury figures such as Friar Juan de Zumarraga and Vasco de Quiroga who struggled with their contemporary moral and ethical issues concerning the justification for enslaving or educating Native American Indians. He highlights the more epistemological concerns of seventeenthcentury thinkers such as Sister Juana Inez de la Cruz, and examines the eighteenthcentury efforts of the Jesuit Diego Jose Abad to assimilate the ideas of modern philosophy into conventional theology. Beuchot discusses Francisco Javier Clavigero's assertions that God's hand could be found in the creativity and cognitive forces of the Native American Indian culture, thereby rendering a dignity to these people and suggesting the movement toward synthesis and resolution. Finally, Beuchot examines the philosophy of the nineteenth century and the eclectic philosophizing of figures such as Father Andres de Guevara y Basoasabal.
