Crime has always been apart of human society. It has been punished in many ways: from banishment to flogging and the death penalty. The History of Punishment reviews the penalties imposed in different cultures and times, addressing some intriguing questions: Can imprisonment reform a criminal? How can a punishment be made to fit the crime? Who should decide what is fit punishment should the victim have a say? This book takes a wide view of legally imposed punishment, looking at how it has been used in different societies (from Singapore to Pakistan) and different times (from ancient Greece right up to the present day). Alongside the clear and informative text, historical etchings and artworks as well as archive and press photographs offer a complete portrait of imprisonment, deportation, corporal punishment and the death penalty.

I bought this book mainly for my collection on criminal justice, and it looks great! I haven't had the chance to read it thoroughly yet, but flipping through, it seems really well-organized. The cover design is also appealing, which is a plus for any bookshelf.

Interesting but Slow at Times
While I found 'The History of Punishment' to be intriguing, some chapters dragged a bit. There's so much information, it can be overwhelming. That said, the perspectives on historical punishment methods are fascinating and worth the read if you can pace yourself.

Not What I Expected at All
I was really looking forward to 'The History of Punishment', but it didn't meet my expectations. Some sections felt redundant and I was hoping for more case studies. I guess I expected it to be more engaging. Disappointed with my purchase.

Insightful and Thought-Provoking
I picked up 'The History of Punishment' for my history class, and it did not disappoint. The depth of research is impressive, and the way it dives into various cultures’ approaches to punishment is really eye-opening. It's a great read for anyone interested in criminology or social justice.
