So, how would you have handled it? Peter, the undisputed leader among us now that Jesus was gone, called a meeting of all the disciples. 'Judas is dead by his own hand,' he said. 'Now we must replace him. Whoever is selected must be someone who has been with us the whole time since our Lord's baptism until now.' Only two of us qualified Matthias and me. I am Joseph bar Sabbas, called Justus. In order to determine whom the Holy Spirit wanted, Peter chose to cast lots between us, a custom used to find out God's will, a silly practice in my opinion. But the sheep's knuckles were cast, and the lot fell to Matthias. By this strange game of chance, I was not chosen. Did this mean I was rejected by God, by Jesus whom I had loved and served all this time? Or had the Spirit given me a special calling, an uncommon path different from the others? * * * While Justus struggled with the outcome of the casting of lots, he could not be denied his dream. He had mingled among the disciples for more than three years. He had been close to Jesus, held private conversations with him, laughed with him, slept around the same campfires, visited the same homes, and eaten at the same tables. The challenge before him now was new, a calling perhaps. He would reveal everything he knew about his Lord from the viewpoint of a privileged witness. Justus began to log all of it in a series of scrolls and then began a journey to secure his work, this wonderful treasure in the great library in Alexandria, Egypt, when someday in the distant future, it would be read and valued. Most have never understood Jesus as a human personality; a man with dusty feet and calloused hands. No individual, in their right mind, can deny the Holy Deity of Jesus of Nazareth. It is interesting to note, however, that Jesus referred to himself as the 'Son of God,' only five times. He referred to himself as the 'Son of Man,' sixtyone times. Has church history misfiled that brief? Now, walk alongside him on the dirt roads of Israel or spend an evening by the campfire with him and his disciples talking about the God who loved fishermen, prostitutes and thieves. You will love the Jesus who laughed and cracked jokes, often about institutionalized religion. In this volume, Justus takes us step by step through the searing personal adventures, miracles, and teachings of the Son of Man. Under flickering shadows, he pens his story; swiftpaced, violent, gentle, bawdy, comic, hardbitten, haunting and passionate; guiding his readers' heartbeat by heartbeat in the steps of this Carpenter of wood, this . . . Carpenter of Men.
