The sum of the digits makes up the answer...and no digit can appear more than once. So imagine that the black square contains the number "7" and there are three boxes to the answer could be 421, 412, 241, 214, 124, or 142, since 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. Each puzzle contains an outlined area that's a good place to the solution to that set is on the last page of the book.
