A deeplyreported, riveting account of a cold case murder in Los Angeles, unsolved until DNA evidence implicated a shocking suspect a female detective within the LAPDs own ranks. On February 24, 1986, 29yearold newlywed Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in the home she shared with her husband, John. The crime scene suggested a ferocious struggle, and police initially assumed it was a burglary gone awry. Before her death, Sherri had confided to her parents that an exgirlfriend of Johns, a Los Angeles police officer, had threatened her. The Rasmussens urged the LAPD to investigate the exgirlfriend, but the original detectives only pursued burglary suspects, and the case went cold.DNA analysis did not exist when Sherri was murdered. Decades later, a swab from a bite mark on Sherris arm revealed her killer was in fact female, not male. A DNA match led to the arrest and conviction of veteran LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus, Johns onetime girlfriend. The Lazarus Files delivers the visceral experience of being inside a reallife murder mystery. McGough reconstructs the lives of Sherri, John and Stephanie; the love triangle that led to Sherris murder; and the homicide investigation that followed. Was Stephanie protected by her fellow officers? What did the LAPD know, and when did they know it? Are there other LAPD cold cases with a police connection that remain unsolved?

I enjoyed The Lazarus Files, but sometimes it felt like it dragged on with too many details. The investigation insights are really compelling, though. If you’re into cold cases, you’ll likely appreciate the depth, but I wish it had picked up the pace a bit in the middle sections.

Sadly not what I expected
I had high hopes for The Lazarus Files, but it just didn’t work for me. The writing seemed off in parts, and I felt it lacked the suspense I was looking for. I was hoping for a gripping investigation, but instead, it was kind of flat. Disappointed.

Intriguing read from start to finish
The Lazarus Files dives deep into the cold case investigations, making it hard to put down! The storytelling is both engaging and informative, really pulling you into the mystery. I bought it for my husband, and he couldn’t stop raving about the detailed descriptions and the twists. Worth every penny!
