In this major work, Blumenberg takes issue with Karl Lwiths wellknown thesis that the idea of progress is a secularized version of Christian eschatology, which promises a dramatic intervention that will consummate the history of the world from outside. Instead, Blumenberg argues, the idea of progress always implies a process at work within history, operating through an internal logic that ultimately expresses human choices and is legitimized by human selfassertion, by mans responsibility for his own fate.

I thought this book would be more accessible, but it’s quite academic. Some parts were over my head, and it felt like it required a lot of background knowledge. If you’re not familiar with German philosophy, it might be challenging.

Long delivery and a bit confusing
I ordered this book a few weeks ago and it took longer than expected to arrive, which was disappointing. Once I started reading, I found some sections confusing. It's a thought-provoking read, but I struggled with parts of the argument.

Great for deep dives into theory
As a graduate student, I found this book helpful for my thesis. It provides comprehensive insights into legitimacy and modernity. Just be warned, it can be quite dense. It’s not light reading, but it’s definitely rewarding!
