Goldsworthy Gurney trained as a surgeon in Cornwall but moved to London in 1820 to participate in the chemistry revolution led by Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday. Successful as an inventor of laboratory equipment, lighting fixtures, and ventilating systems, he failed to convert his pioneering designs for steam locomotion into commercial success. His career illuminates the social and scientific communities that flourished alongside or under the shadow of Davy, Faraday, and Stephenson.

This book about Goldsworthy's life is filled with intriguing facts, but I found some sections a bit slow. The storytelling is great, though, and I got a lot of insight into the inventor's world. I'd still say it's worth a read if you enjoy biographies.

A Fascinating Read!
I purchased 'The Life and Times of Goldsworthy' for my history-loving husband, and he couldn't put it down! The way it details the life of this gentleman scientist is both engaging and informative. The illustrations are a nice touch, making the experience even better. Perfect for anyone who appreciates inventors and their contributions!
