Gillespie (U. of ArizonaTucson) draws mostly on Ramsay's own writings, some 200 print pages published in 1814 as Memoirs of the Life of Martha Laurens Ramsay. She notes that though Ramsay was from and in Charlestown, South Carolina, the form of the volume and tone of the writing is in the vein of New England women's confessional writing of the time concerned almost totally with her spiritual and religious journey.
