Magic is a socioreligious phenomenon which has long, wellestablished roots in Banten Muslim society. It is traceable from many literatures that describe the uniqueness of Banteneses culture. Debus, the cultivation of invulnerability to fire and sharp metal objects, is the most conspicuous representative of the magical tradition in Banten since the sultanate period up to the present, besides other magical practices. The existence of debus Banten and other kinds of magical practices in Banten has strengthened the reputation of Banten as a haven of magical sciences. These magical practices are still regarded important for Bantenese people, especially who live in the villages to solve their practical problems in their social life. This book, furthermore, provides description of magical practices of Muslim society of Banten, Indonesia. Kyai hikmah or ahli hikmah (Islamic religious figures), jawara (local strongmen), and dukun (traditional curers or shamans) are three Bantenese figures who are believed having and practicing magical power for helping to solve practical problems of the society. Therefore, they have high and respectable positions in Banten society.
