The essays that follow pretend to be no more than records of my attempt to account for some of the pleasure I have found in studying certain rightly famous and familiar works of the English eighteenth century. However much we may need to sophisticate the matter professionally, the strongest lingering effect of reading these masters Johnson, Boswell, Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne is still that of the pleasure of their company. To know them is a lifting thing: instructive, entertaining, invigorating. The notions of heaviness, of weight and dullness, that time has attached to the period are carelessness and nonsense: this is a tonic art. No one since these masters has spoken with such lightness and brightness, such lucidity and gaiety, so round a sanity except Jane Austen, whose career turned the century and who was really a child of their bosom, the last of their noble line I mean to affirm that the effects of genius in the English eighteenth century are among the purest and richest available to us. If we approach them in our own spirit, with no defensiveness and no condescension, we see how much pleasure they felt and how much truth they told, in a triumph of style commensurate with clear vision. [From Authors Preface]
