Miss Dale writes for classical scholars and others interested in metric. An ear trained to stress-rhythm can apprehend rhythms based on quantity only with the greatest difficulty. Miss Dales achievement lies first in instructing the readers ear to respond to a purely quantitative rhythm, then in identifying the characteristic rhythms of Greek lyric and the laws which control them - all without losing sight of the poetry. This book was first published in 1948, and Miss Dale completed her work on the 1968 second edition before her death. In it she has corrected what she calls the errors and shortcomings of the first, and has taken into account work published in the intervening years.

I was really looking forward to this book, but it came with a dented cover and a few pages were bent. The content seems great, but the condition was not as advertised. I’m considering returning it since I wanted it in pristine shape for my collection.

Good content, but not what I expected
I bought this book thinking it would have more commentary on the verses, but it’s mostly the text. It’s in excellent condition, but I found myself wanting more background information. Still, it’s a useful reference for anyone studying Greek drama.
