In 1910, a remarkable correspondence began between a wealthy and distinguished Bostonian philanthropist, Fanny Quincy Howe, and Maimie Pinzer, a Jewish prostitute living in Philadelphia and recovering from a morphine addiction developed after the loss of an eye. The Maimie Papers is Maimies side of that correspondence, offering an unprecedented and still unique account of the life of a woman of the streets and her inspiring transformation. An afterword by Ruth Rosen traces the elusive trail of Mamies life following the end of her correspondence, from an elegant apartment in Chicago to a new life in the glamorous Southern California of the late 1920s. The Mamie Papers introduces an unforgettable woman with a powerful writers voice, of whom the New York Times Book Review says, Mamie writes like a dream. . . . An astonishing book.

I received my copy of 'Letters from an Exprostitute' with a dent on the cover, which was disappointing. The content itself is quite intriguing, but I wish it had arrived in better condition. Like the stories, though, they’re worth a read.

Intriguing but Lacked Depth
The book is interesting, but I felt it could’ve gone deeper into Scheuer's experiences. It's part of the Jewish Women’s Series, so I expected a bit more context on her life. Still, I appreciate the unique perspective.

An Important Historical Perspective
I found 'Letters from an Exprostitute' to be both informative and emotional. It's part of a really important series that highlights Jewish women's histories. I’d suggest it to anyone who loves biographies and wants to understand more about past struggles.

An Eye-Opening Read
I picked up 'Letters from an Exprostitute' from The Maimie Papers, and it did not disappoint. Helen Rose Scheuer’s voice is raw and real; you can almost feel her experiences leap off the page. It's a must-read for anyone interested in women's history.

Thought-Provoking Material
This book really opened my eyes to the struggles faced by women back then. The letters are compelling and made me reflect on so many societal issues. If you're into historical narratives, you'll enjoy it.
