To learn about its territories in the New World, Spain commissioned a survey of Spanish officials in Mexico between 1578 and 1584, asking for local maps as well as descriptions of local resources, history, and geography. In The Mapping of New Spain, Barbara Mundy illuminates both the Amerindian (Aztec, Mixtec, and Zapotec) and the Spanish traditions represented in these maps and traces the reshaping of indigene world views in the wake of colonization.

The maps in this book are quite stunning, but I was hoping for a bit more explanation in some sections. While the indigenous cartography is beautifully illustrated, some of the historical context surrounding the maps feels a bit sparse. Still, a solid read if you're serious about the subject!

Disappointed with the condition upon arrival
I was excited to receive 'The Mapping of New Spain' but it arrived with a few pages bent and a corner damaged. The content seems interesting, but I was really bummed about the condition. I expected better packaging or handling given the price.

A fascinating look at history!
I recently picked up 'The Mapping of New Spain' and it's just incredible. The indigenous cartography is so well presented, and the maps from the Relaciones Geográficas are beautifully detailed. This book is perfect for anyone interested in history or geography. I find myself getting lost in the maps for hours!
