Product DescriptionExtending the examination in Prescott's 1985 first edition, he and fellow Australian political geographer Schofield focus on two maritime boundaries that define the marine domain of coastal states. The first is the baseline from which national maritime claims are made, and consists of a lowwater line or straight lines joining points on the lowwater line or a combination of lowwater line and straight lines. This they look at from such perspectives as islands and rocks, and maritime boundary disputes and options for dispute resolution. The second boundary consists of a suite of lines, each defining the outer limits of a specific zone of seas and seabed: territorial waters, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone, and the continental shelf more than 200 nautical miles from the baseline. They look at these in specific locations, such as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill. Annotation 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)ReviewPraise for the first edition:''This may well be the best of Prescott's many books in political geography. It deals with a major world issue, it is current, well researched, thorough, and well written. It is the first practical treatise on the subject to appear since the adoption of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.[] This work is likely to remain a valuable resource for many years.'M.I. Glassner, 'Choice, 1986.''In this book J.R.V. Prescott, a geographer at the University of Melbourne, has provided his readers with a comprehensive picture of the state of the maritime boundaries of the world, at a time when there is strong pressure to extend state control. Naturally, this process entails plenty of international wrangling. This is not a book to be 'enjoyed', or even read through in large chunks, but it is a very useful reference book for anyone interested in maritime affairs.'Ken Booth, 'International Affairs, 1986.
