Jacks assignment: to capture the Indian Ocean islands of Runion and Mauritius from the French. That campaign forms the narrative thread of this rollicking sea saga. But its substance is more beguiling still. Elizabeth Peer, Newsweek The year is 1810 and Great Britain is again at war with France. British naval officer Captain Jack Aubrey is ashore on half pay without a command, living in domestic bliss with his young familyuntil his friend Stephen Maturin arrives with secret orders for Aubrey to take a frigate to the Cape of Good Hope under a commodores pennant and mount an expedition against the Frenchheld islands of Mauritius and La Runion. But the difficulties of carrying out these orders are compounded by two of Aubreys own captains: Lord Clonfert, a pleasureseeking dilettante, and Captain Corbett, whose severity pushes his crew to the verge of mutiny. Meanwhile, news from home that will change the course of Aubreys life struggles to reach him.

I was really looking forward to reading this collection, but it came with a dented cover and some pages were wrinkled. It looks like the package didn’t hold up during shipping. The stories seem good, but I was really let down by the condition it arrived in.

Great read, but long delivery time
I bought this collection as a gift for my husband, who loves Patrick O'Brian's work. The books are fantastic, but it took a while to arrive, which was a bit disappointing. Still, he was thrilled to receive them, especially the vivid descriptions of naval battles.

Somewhat slow-paced but rewarding
I enjoyed the characters and their relationships, but I found some parts of the story dragged a bit. The writing is beautiful, and it’s obvious O'Brian put a lot of thought into the details of the naval life. If you're patient with pacing, it’s a rewarding read.

A must-read for any naval history fan
The Mauritius Command novel really dives into the intricacies of naval warfare with such detail. I was captivated by Aubrey and Maturin's adventures and how the story weaves historical facts into fiction. This is perfect for anyone who enjoys rich narratives and historical context.
