The Nanticoke, an Algonkian tribe, were living along the shores of Chesapeake Bay when Europeans settled in the Tidewater area of what is now Maryland. This book describes their hunting and gathering way of life before the colonial period, and their repeated and varied attempts to survive threats to their territory and environment. Today the Nanticoke live in Delaware, where their struggle to adjust to and succeed in the modern world is paralleled by their effort to learn about their past in order to revitalize their tribal identity.
