The practice of observing therapeutic confidentiality is so riddled with exceptions that it has all but disappeared. This book lucidly describes the disappearance of privacy, showing how the clinical effect of this loss has been destructive and how mental health professionals may respond constructively. The New England Journal of MedicineThe authors, a therapist and a lawyer, document the erosion of psychotherapistpatient confidentiality caused by the reporting laws, by the requirements of managed care, and by other features of the contemporary culture of disclosure. They analyze the failure of organized psychology, psychiatry, and social work to sound the alarm about such invasions, a failure especially perplexing in light of judicial sympathy for the psychotherapistpatient privilege. To the authors, psychotherapy without confidentiality is impossible. They propose important remedies for this clinical and ethical disaster.

This book really opened my eyes to the ethical dilemmas in psychoanalysis. The discussions around confidentiality are so relevant today. I bought it for my psychology class, and it sparked some great conversations! Definitely worth the read.

Thought-Provoking but Dense
The Betrayal of Confidentiality has some interesting insights, but I found parts of it pretty dense. It's a bit hard to digest at times. I appreciate the subject matter, but I wish it was a little more accessible for casual readers.

Disappointed by the Content
Unfortunately, I was let down by this book. It didn't cover as much practical information as I hoped. Some of the case studies felt outdated. I was expecting more depth in analysis given the topic.
