This fourth volume covers the period from Dryden to Johnson. It begins with a survey of the social context of English Literature during this period, followed by a survey of the literature itself, much of it of a series of essays dealing with detail with Dryden, Swift, Pope; the Essayists, the novelists Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Smollett and Sterne; Goldsmith, Johnson, etc. There are also essays on Hogarth, and eighteenthcentury architecture and planning. Finally the volume contains an appendix of biographies and bibliographies.

I was hoping for a more accessible overview, but this book feels like it’s aimed at experts. The writing is too complex for someone just looking to enjoy the literature from that time. It also arrived a bit damaged, which was disappointing.

A Deep Dive into English Literature
As a literature student, I found this volume to be incredibly insightful. Covering the period from Dryden to Johnson, it’s detailed and well-organized, making it easy to reference. The annotations really help clarify the texts for anyone not familiar with the era.

Good, but a bit dense
This guide is a treasure trove of information, but sometimes it feels overwhelming. I love the coverage from Dryden to Johnson, but the language can be quite dense for casual readers. Definitely useful for academics, though!
