Stuart Kauffman has written a challenging book on the general problem of the origins of life and maintenance of order in complex biological systems. Kauffman contends that the basic concepts of Darwinian evolution by natural selection must be extended to accommodate new information from molecular biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Kauffmans hallmark is a shift to nonlinear paradigms for living systems. Kauffman argues that biological order is largely selforganized and spontaneous, and proposes to extend evolutionary theory beyond Darwin. His thesis requires three components: an understanding of spontaneous sources of order and selforganization; integration with natural selection, which in Kauffmans scheme molds biological order; and a consideration of adaptation. Origins of Order will advance our understanding of evolution and provoke considerable discussion among evolutionary, molecular and developmental biologists.

I just finished reading 'The Origins of Order' and it was truly enlightening! The way it explains self-organization in evolution is both clear and engaging. I found myself highlighting so many passages — it’s a book I’ll return to for sure.

Intriguing but Dense at Times
This book has a lot of great insights about evolution, but some sections felt a bit overwhelming with all the complex ideas. I really liked the focus on self-organization, but I had to reread a few chapters to fully grasp everything. Worth the effort, though!

Disappointed in the Presentation
I was really looking forward to this book, but it didn’t live up to my expectations. The concepts are interesting, but I found the writing style dry and hard to engage with. I ended up putting it down after a few chapters. Not what I hoped for.
