Delany's gift was hospitality and his reward was a collegiate and convivial environment. He served as the friend, mentor, supporter, or chastiser of no less than Sheridan and Swift, and was also a quite good if often selfdepreciating poet in his own right. In this volume of verse by and about Delany, arranged chronologically to get the statement and the response just right, Hogan (late English, U. of Delaware) and Mell (English, U. of Delaware) present Delany's verse, including that previously thought to be by others, and poems in which Delany had his hand along with Swift, Sheridan and Esther Johnson. A respected pastor in the Church of Ireland, it seems Delany's other gifts included sparkling Irish puns, wry commentary, and a deep devotion to his beloved in such works as "I'm an Emblem of Marriage."
