Sited at the furthest limits of the Neolithic revolution and standing at the confluence of the two great sea routes of prehistory, Britain and Ireland are distinct from continental Europe for much of the prehistoric sequence. In this landmark 2007 study the first significant survey of the archaeology of Britain and Ireland for twenty years Richard Bradley offers an interpretation of the unique archaeological record of these islands based on a wealth of current and largely unpublished data. Bradley surveys the entire archaeological sequence over a 4,000 year period, from the adoption of agriculture in the Neolithic period to the discovery of Britain and Ireland by travellers from the Mediterranean during the later preRoman Iron Age. Significantly, this is the first modern account to treat Britain and Ireland on equal terms, offering a detailed interpretation of the prehistory of both islands.

I bought this book for my history buff friend, and he couldn’t put it down. The detailed exploration of Britain and Ireland’s prehistoric eras is a treasure for anyone interested in archaeology. I appreciated how it covers different archaeological findings in a clear way, making complex topics accessible.

Not What I Hoped For
I really wanted to enjoy this book, but the writing felt dry and uninviting. Maybe it's better for academics, but I found it hard to engage with. The content is important, but if you’re looking for a narrative style, this isn’t it. I was let down.

Informative but Dense
This book is packed with information, which I love, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times. The academic style isn't the easiest to digest for casual readers. Still, it’s a great resource for serious students of archaeology looking into Britain and Ireland.

Great Resource, Minor Flaws
The insights in The Prehistory of Britain and Ireland are fantastic, but I was disappointed by the illustrations — some were hard to see clearly. I expected more visual aids. Still, it’s a must-have for anyone studying this topic. Just a little frustrating at times.
