Why is the account of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel so very different from the one we find in the Synoptic Gospels? Professor Hanson believes that at least part of the answer can be found in the considerable dependence of Johns narrative on the Old Testament. I just finished reading The Prophetic Gospel, and wow, it really deepens your understanding of John’s writings in light of the Old Testament. The connections make the scriptures feel more cohesive. If you’re studying theology, this is a must-have for your collection!

Great for Group Discussions
I bought this book for my Bible study group, and it sparked some serious discussions. The way it analyzes John through the lens of the Old Testament is really interesting. My only complaint is the format; it could be more engaging, but the content is solid.

Not What I Expected
I was looking for more practical applications, but this book leans heavily into the academic side. It’s well-researched but a bit dense for casual readers. If you’re expecting something light, this might not be for you. Still, the insights are valuable if you dig in!
