The son of a carpenter, Julian Sorel is inspired by the writings of Napoleon to conquer the heights of society. His initial plan to work his way up through the church is, however, thwarted when he is forced to accept employment as a tutorand this rash social entrepreneur certainly has not considered the dangers of falling in love. Stendhals novel is an amusing and piquant study of hypocrisy and free will in postNapoleonic France.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford Worlds Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. I really enjoyed the story of 'The Red and the Black', and this Oxford World's Classics edition is pretty nice. The cover design is attractive, although I think it could be a bit cheaper. Still, it’s a solid addition to my collection!

Not my favorite classic
I got this book thinking I’d love it, but 'The Red and the Black' didn’t quite resonate with me. The Oxford edition is nice, but the story felt a bit tedious. I wanted to love it, but I guess it wasn’t for me.

Impressive and insightful read
This Oxford World's Classics edition of 'The Red and the Black' is fantastic. The notes and introduction provide great context. Stendhal's exploration of ambition and society in the 19th century is just brilliant!
