Product DescriptionWhen Russell the cat receives a new toy mouse, Joanne the mouse thinks the toy is her Aunt Pansy and is determined to save herFrom Publishers WeeklyWhen Russell the cat receives a new toy mouse, Joanne the mouse mistakenly identifies the plaything as her dear Aunt Pansy. She valiantly drags the toy away from Russell, only to discover her mistake. Cat and mouse wind up friends; in fact, "the three of them were very happy." Ernst (Up to Ten and Down Again, Hamilton's Art Show, etc.) heightens the drama with split pages that involve the reader in the story. Younger readers may not immediately understand that the toy mouse is not Aunt Pansy; nevertheless, this is fun for all. Ages 38.Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalPreSchoolK A simple story in which Ernst uses halfpages to dovetail with her doublepage spreads. Russell, a cat, is given a pink toy mouse to play with. Joanne, a wellintentioned mouse, rescues what she supposes to be her Aunt Pansy from his toying claws while Russell sleeps. A slapstick chase ensuesRussell just missing Joanne and the toy mouse as they dash behind a curtain or under his water dish. The halfpage is used to show the escapees runningflipand hiding, and Ernst uses the device cleverly. Russell traps toy and mouse finally, and he decides that two new friends would be just the thing. It's just too silly. Who would confuse a pink rubber toy for a live gray mouse? It's also unfortunate that some of the composition is buried in the gutter. When Russell's face is obscured as his closeup smile jumps across the gutter, one is sorely tempted to crack the binding in order to see his face. All of Ernst's cleverness seems to have been poured into engineering the halfpages (and they are very cleverly worked out) but not into the complete effect of each spread. A disappointing effort.
