In the present book, David Canter, Professor of Applied Psychology at the University of Surrey, Jennifer Brown, a senior research fellow at the University of Surrey, and the late Michael Brenner, formerly of Oxford Polytechnic, bring together a variety of contributions dealing with the many aspects of the uses of the interview in research. The structured interview, as well as more openended procedures, are considered, together with sorting procedures and life history analyses. Some especially innovative uses of the interview in understanding decision processes and activities in emergencies are also considered. In addition, procedures for analyzing and interpreting interview data are described, such as content and thematic analyses. Problems of reliability and validity are variously discussed by the contributing authors. The book will be of value to all people in the behavioral, social, and managerial sciences who wish to enrich their uses of interviews in research.
