Toby Huff examines the longstanding question of why modern science arose only in the West and not in the civilizations of Islam and China, despite the fact that medieval Islam and China were more scientifically advanced. Huff explores the cultural contexts within which science was practiced in Islam, China, and the West. He finds major clues in the history of law and the European cultural revolution of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as to why the ethos of science arose in the West and permitted the breakthrough to modern science that did not occur elsewhere. This book really opened my eyes to the connections between early modern science and different cultures. The way it contrasts Islamic and Chinese contributions with those from the West is fascinating. I bought it for a history class, and my students are loving it!

Great content but a bit dense
I appreciate the depth of information in 'The Rise of Early Modern Science', but some sections feel a little heavy. It's a bit challenging to get through at times, especially for casual readers. Still, the insights on Islam and China are really valuable!

Disappointing layout and print quality
I was excited to read this book, but I found the print quality lacking. The text is small and the layout feels cramped. I managed to finish it, but it was a strain on my eyes. Wish it was formatted better, since the content is great!
