In 1934, famed British traveler Freya Stark sailed down the Red Sea, alighting in Aden, located at the tip of the Arabian peninsula. From this backwater outpost, Stark set forth on what was to be her most unforgettable adventure: Following the ancient frankincense routes of the Hadhramaut Valley, the most fertile in Arabia, she sought to be the first Westerner to locate and document the lost city of Shabwa. Chronicling her journey through the towns and encampments of the Hadhramaut, The Southern Gates of Arabia is a tale alive with sheikhs and sultans, tragedy and triumph. Although the claim to discovering Shabwa would not ultimately be Starks, The Southern Gates of Arabia, a bestseller upon its original publication, remains a classic in the literature of travel. This edition includes a new Introduction by Jane Fletcher Geniesse, Starks biographer.

The prose in this book is just lovely! I’m not super familiar with the Hadhramaut, so it was great to learn about it through such captivating storytelling. Highly recommend for anyone curious about the region!

Disappointed with the delivery
The book itself is fine, but I had issues with how it arrived. It took longer than expected and the package was damaged. Can't say it’s the best experience I’ve had buying books.

Interesting, but some issues
I enjoyed the insights into Hadhramaut’s culture, but the paperback quality wasn’t great. The cover arrived slightly bent, which was disappointing. Still, the content kept me engaged!

Not what I expected
I was hoping for more personal stories, but it was mostly factual. The writing is solid, but it didn’t completely grab my attention. I still learned a lot about Hadhramaut, just wasn’t the narrative I was looking for.

A fascinating read on Hadhramaut
The Southern Gates of Arabia is such an engaging journey through the Hadhramaut region. The modern library paperback makes it easy to hold while reading. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions and cultural insights, really took me to another world!
