A ghostlike object of simultaneous fascination and dread, the mother plays a marginal role in Freud’s theoretical writings. Madelon Sprengnether finds Freud’s attitudes toward the preoedipal mother to be a key to his theorizing on femininity. Sprengnether both looks at how Freud avoided issues involving the mother and undertakes a daring reinterpretation of the preoedipal mother from the perspective of feminist psychoanalytic theory.

I found 'The Spectral Mother' to be a deep dive into Freud's theories from a feminist perspective. It challenges a lot of traditional ideas, which I appreciated. The used condition was actually better than I expected; pages are clean and well-preserved.

A Must for Psychoanalysis Lovers
If you're into psychoanalysis and feminism, this book is a great find! The arguments are well-presented and really make you think. I bought it used, and it arrived in surprisingly good condition—definitely worth it.

Mixed Feelings About Content
This book has some excellent points, but I felt it dragged in parts. The used copy I received had a few highlights from the previous owner, which was a bit distracting. Still, it's a valuable addition to feminist psychoanalysis discussions.

Disappointed with the Quality
I was really excited to read this book, but the condition was worse than I anticipated. It had noticeable wear and tear, which made it hard to focus on the content. I wish I had gone for a new copy instead.

Not What I Expected
I was hoping for more clarity on how feminism interacts with Freud's ideas. The book is insightful but sometimes feels like it goes in circles. Also, the spine was a bit creased, which bugged me. Overall, it's interesting but not for everyone.
