The reading failure of a large proportion of nonmainstream African American adolescents by the time they reach high school has been an ongoing crisis in American public education. Now a second crisis is brewing related to the new federal standards for high school graduation. A large proportion of these students who are already marginalized by the system will drop out of high school and not go on to graduate. Rather than spending billions of dollars offering nonmainstream students the same ineffective solutions that have failed in the past, a new solution is needed.This book demonstrates the power of teaching these students more effectively by initially using materials based in African American Language and then helping them transfer this increased competence to Standard English in stages, mixing dialect and standard language forms before moving entirely to Standard English. Dr. Simpkins presents programs designed to intervene in the pattern of failure building on the language knowledge students already possess to encourage a positive and effective approach to improving reading skills. Educators believe almost universally in John Dewey's axiom, "Start where the child is." Many of today's linguists echo this axiom with the insight, "Build on the child's culturallinguistic knowledge." Dr. Simpkins prevents solid evidence that this approach is effective.
