In the most detailed history ever of Union warships on the western waters of the Civil War, the author recounts the exploits of the timberclad ships Lexington, Tyler, and Conestoga. Converted to warships from commercial steamboats at the beginning of the conflict, the three formed the core of the Norths Western Flotilla, later the Mississippi Squadron. The book focuses on the activities of these wooden warriors while providing context for the greater war, including accounts of their famous commanders, their roles in both large and small battles, shiptoship combat, and support for the armies of Gen. U.S. Grant and Gen. William T. Sherman.

I was really excited to read about the Timberclads, but the formatting of the book was off. Some pages were hard to follow, and a couple of images were blurry. It might be an interesting topic, but I expected better production quality. Not sure I can recommend it at this time.

A Deep Dive into Civil War History
As a history buff, I really enjoyed reading this book! The insights into the Timberclads like the Lexington and Conestoga on the western waters were fascinating. It’s well-researched and offers great detail about the naval aspects of the Civil War. Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in military history!

Interesting but Dense at Times
I found the book to be quite informative about the Timberclads used during the Civil War. However, some sections felt a bit dense and could've used more engaging storytelling. Still, I appreciate the amount of research that went into it. Worth checking out if you're into naval warfare.
