The Toltecs, a Postclassic people of Central Mexico, flourished from about AD 900 to AD 1179, succeeding the Teotihuacan culture and preceding the Aztec or Mexica culture. Drawing upon archaeological records and upon the documentary sources, the author here attempts to compile an accurate history of these people, about whom there is a great deal of controversy. To as accurate an extent as possible the author sorts out what is fact, what may be fact and what is pure legend: He sets up a chronology of events in Toltec history: he ascertains, from the available evidence, the extent of the Toltec Empire at its zenith and the extent of its government, economic and social organization. Beginning with a discussion of the problems involved in unravelling the Mesoamerican sources and reconciling their data with the archaeological sources, the book then describes the collapse of Teotihuacan the rise of Tula as the center of Toltec civilization, and the relations between tula and the Mayan city, Chichen Itza. The book ends with a detailed discussion of the collapse of Tula, with particular emphasis on the problems of chronology.
