The Universe in Verse is an ode to wonder and an exploration of the human search for truth and meaning.Poetry and science, as Popova writes in her introduction, are instruments for knowing the world more intimately and loving it more deeply. In 15 short essays on subjects ranging from the mystery of dark matter and the infinity of pi to the resilience of trees and the intelligence of octopuses, Popova tells the stories of scientific searching and discovery. These stories are interwoven with details from the very real and human lives of scientistsmany of them women, many underrecognizedand poets inspired by the same questions and the beauty they reveal. Each essay is paired with a poem reflecting its subject by poets ranging from Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden, and Edna St. Vincent Millay to Maya Angelou, Diane Ackerman, and Tracy K. Smith, and is stunningly illustrated by celebrated artist Ofra Amit. Together, they wake us to a reality aglow with wonder.

I bought this for my sister who loves both poetry and science, and she absolutely adored it. The combination of art and knowledge is really well done, and I think it’s perfect for anyone looking to explore these themes together.

A Journey Through Science and Poetry
The Universe in Verse is a delightful blend of science and poetry. Each portal takes you on a unique journey, and I love how it sparks curiosity in my kids. We read it together, and it’s made our science discussions much more engaging!

Beautifully Illustrated but a Bit Complex
I found the illustrations in this book stunning, but some of the poetry felt a bit advanced for younger readers. It's a great book for older kids and adults, but I wish there were simpler explanations for the scientific concepts included. Still, it's a lovely read!

Disappointing Quality, Arrived Damaged
I was really excited to receive this book, but it arrived with a dent in the cover and a few pages crumpled. The content is intriguing, but the quality issues really disappointed me. I hope they improve packaging next time!

Engaging but Some Poems Fall Flat
While I appreciate the effort to combine science with poetry, I felt some poems missed the mark for me. A few were hard to connect with, but the concept is interesting and some pieces were genuinely beautiful. It's a mixed bag for sure!
