THE VERY LONG STREET is a tale told by Felwet, a one of a kind (because he's a hodgepodge of rodent genes) rodent, whose tail, one day, while he himself is scrounging in a park for rolypolies, is mistaken for a worm by a mother bird. She snatches him and flies him out of the park, but upon realizing her mistake, she flusters, hits a lightpost, and lands in a backyard. Ailing and contrite about her blunder, she asks Felwet to take care of her nestlings. Not being hardhearted (but not without wavering), he agrees to, but there is one enormous difficulty: the nestlings are in a nest at the end of a very long street. It's quite a task, and Felwet won't be able to do it by himself. In fact, he'll need a hamster, rat, guinea pig, kindhearted man, chinchilla, dog, and two squirrels to help him along the way, but even that won't be enough. On top of that, he'll need a lot of gumption and a little bit of good luck, for the very long street is indeed very long.
