Luego de descubrir la pervivencia de la micolatra en los pueblos que habitan a orillas del Ocano rtico (Mushrooms, Rissia & History) y de captar las resonancias culturales evocadas por dichas plantas en la prehistoria y la protohistoria helnicas (El camino a Eleusis, FCE, 1980), R. Gordon Wasson decidi recoger sus experiencias del mundo mesoamericano para tratar de elucidar los misterios relacionados con el culto a los hongos y su relevancia en casi todos los rdenes de la vida social: El hongo maravilloso desarrolla uno de los ltimos captulos de la etnomicologa o estudio del papel desempeado por los 'hongos mgicos' en la historia de las sociedades primitivas.En sus pesquisas, el autor no escatim la consulta ni el examen de muchsimas fuentes escritas e iconogrficas (as los clsicos relatos de Sahagn y Motolina, como las ms diversas piezas de cermica, pintura y escultura, sin pasar por alto el rico acervo de los cdices y la poesa nahuatl); pero su trabajo no se ci al reducido mbito de un gabinete. Fue en las serranas de los estados de Puebla, Oaxaca, Vercruz y Mxico donde forj los instrumentos idneos para adentrarse en aquella tcnica arcaica que, a pesar de cuatro siglos de dominacin hispnica y en muchos casos tambin amalgamada a tradiciones cristianas, contina verificndose entre el chamn, que sabe interpretar el lenguaje de estas plantas que 'le hablan con la voz de Dios', y el puado de indios que son sus seguidores.De este amplio recorrido ha resultado un trabajo cuyo mrito central es al innovadora interpretacin del papel de los hongos antes y despus de la Conquista, y que habr de obligarnos a reconsiderar muchos de los conceptos tradicionales en el campo de la etnologa y la antropologa, en el de la historia y aun en el del arte.
