Drawing on two decades of experience as a war correspondent and based on his numerous columns for Truthdig, Chris Hedges presents The World As It Is, a panorama of the American empire at home and abroad, from the coarsening effect of Americas War on Terror to the front lines in the Middle East and South Asia and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Underlying his reportage is a constant struggle with the nature of war and its impact on human civilization. War is always about betrayal, Hedges notes. It is about betrayal of the young by the old, of cynics by idealists, and of soldiers and Marines by politicians. Societys institutions, including our religious institutions, which mold us into compliant citizens, are unmasked.

I had high hopes for this book based on the reviews, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. Some sections felt repetitive and overly complex. I appreciate the author's intent but just didn't connect with the writing style. Might work for others though.

Deep Dive Into Humanity
'The World As It Is' really challenges your perspective on progress and society. I loved how it navigates through historical context and modern implications. This is a must-read for anyone interested in social theory or philosophy. Highly engaging!

A Mixed Bag
This book has some intriguing insights, but honestly, the used condition was not as described. There were noticeable marks on the pages, which was a bit disappointing. Still, the content itself is worth a read, just wish it came in better shape.

Thought-Provoking Read
I recently picked up 'Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress' and it’s been a real eye-opener! The way it critiques our understanding of progress is fascinating, even if I found some ideas a bit dense. Grab it if you're into deep philosophical discussions!
