Innerhalb von Fontanes letztem Roman kommt dem 29. Kapitel mit dem auch politisch brisanten Dialog zwischen der Grfin Melusine und dem Pfarrer Lorenzen eine zentrale Bedeutung zu. Im Rahmen einer Zusammenfassung des Textabschnitts werden zunchst deren zentrale Motive wie die Bezge zu Joo de Deus und dem AltNeuThema interpretiert. Besondere Bercksichtigung erfhrt die von Melusine verwendete Formel vom groen Zusammenhang der Dinge', deren philosophiegeschichtliche Einordnung (Christian Wolff, Hermann Lotze) unternommen wird. Im Zentrum der politischen Debatte steht die von Lorenzen artikulierte Preuenkritik; der Prestigeverlust von Militr und Adel wird mit der zunehmenden gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung von (Natur) Wissenschaft und Technik kontrastiert. Daraufhin werden unter Zuhilfenahme der kontroversen Forschungsliteratur die zeitgeschichtlichen Implikationen des Diskurses sowie die politischen Positionen der beiden Protagonisten errtert. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die inhaltliche Kongruenz von Lorenzens Ansicht mit brieflichen uerungen Fontanes hingewiesen. Schlielich werden die diversen Themen des 29. Kapitels mit dem See Stechlin als dem Titelgebenden und zentralen Romanmotiv in Verbindung gebracht. Eine umfangreiche Bibliographie rundet die aufschlussreiche Untersuchung ab.
