Etwa Mitte der achtziger Jahre finden sich die ersten skizzenhaften Entwrfe zu einem Roman ber eine Berliner Kommerzienrtin. Doch erst im Jahre 1891/92 wird der Roman unter dem Namen Frau Jenny Treibel oder Wo sich Herz zum Herzen findt' verffentlicht. Die Handlung des Romans liee sich rasch erzhlen: Die Professorentochter Corinna Schmidt versucht in die Industriellenfamilie Treibel einzuheiraten, doch ihre Plne werden von der Schwiegermutter in spe der Jugendfreundin ihres Vaters verhindert, da diese auf eine finanzkrftigere oder adlige Schwiegertochter hofft. Wre es mit dieser schon fast trivial anmutenden Geschichte getan, htte sich Fontane fr die endgltigen Fertigstellung wohl kaum ber 5 Jahre Zeit gelassen und sein Roman wrde heute wohl kaum zu den Klassikern der deutschen Literatur zhlen und immer noch mit so viel Freude gelesen werden. Es ist das humoristische, fein gezeichnete Bild der Gesellschaft um 1900, das diesem Roman so viel Tiefe verleiht. Pointiert und unterhaltsam stellt Fontane eine Gesellschaft mit ihren typenhaften Mitgliedern dar, in welcher er selbst gelebt hat. So schreibt Fontane 1888 in einem Brief an seinen Sohn, die Intention seines Romans sei, das Hohle, das Phrasenhafte, Lgnerische, Hochmtige, Hartherzige des Bourgeoisstandpunkts zu zeigen'. Wie man aus seinen zahlreich berlieferten Briefen wei, sind Charaktere in Fontanes Romanen nur sehr selten rein individuell zu sehen, sie reprsentieren eigentlich immer auch einen Typus Mensch mal mehr, mal weniger.
