Der vorliegende Band stellt einen Auszug aus einer Reihe von Vorlesungen dar, die ich an der Frankfurter Universitat unter dem Thema 'EinfUhrung in die Theorie der chemischen Bindung' fUr die Chemiestudenten nach dem Vorexamen hielt. Es ist nicht meine Absicht, den zahlreichen Abhandlungen iiber Quanten mechanik eine weitere hinzuzufUgen oder die 'Rezeptbiicher' iiber die Anwendung mehr oder weniger schlecht begriindeter dennoch niitzlicher Vorstellungen zu erweitern. Es ist vielmehr mein Anliegen, zunachst in die Sprache der Bindungs theorie einzufUhren, die Struktur der Theorie zu verdeutlichen und schlieBlich moglichst ausfUhrlich an einigen Beispielen den jeweiligen Naherungscharakter der verwandten Methode herauszustellen. Dies scheint mir besonders fUr den Anfanger wichtig zu sein, damit er von Anbeginn seiner Beschaftigung mit' Theore tischer Chemie' nicht dem TrugschluB erliegt, daB die verschiedenen Beschrei bungsweisen der chemischen Bindung in dem Sinne zu verstehen seien: 'So ist es und nicht anders', daB sie demgegeniiber mehr oder weniger gute d. h. die experimentelle Erfahrung widerspiegelnde Abbildungen der Wirklichkeit sind. In einer so kurzen Darstellung kann notwendigerweise nur der Versuch unter nommen werden, dem fortgeschrittenen Studenten eine Hilfe in die Hand zu geben, die eine Briicke zwischen den Lehrbiichern der Physikalischen Chemie einerseits und den Spezialwerken andererseits schlagt. Letzteren werden sich auch in Zukunft sicher nur relativ wenige, speziell interessierte Studenten zuwenden.
