Nach Darlegung der Theorie, betrachtet die Arbeit die individuellen Konstruktionen der Zeitmaschinen. Sie untersucht mit welchen Mitteln die Figuren in den Geschichten der Filmbeispiele durch die Zeit springen und wie diese Zeitsprnge dargestellt werden. Dennoch, entgegen der Tendenz zu Zeitmaschinen, existieren verschiedene Vorrichtungen, um eine solche Reise durchzufhren. Diese werden hier an ausgewhlten Beispielen in Aussehen und Funktion dargestellt. Nun mag sich die Frage stellen, warum auf die Funktion der Zeitmaschine eingegangen wird, zumal diese schlielich offensichtlich erscheint: Die Funktion der Zeitmaschine ist es, eine Person oder einen Gegenstand aus seiner Zeit in eine andere Zeit, beispielsweise zwei Jahre in die Vergangenheit oder zwei Jahre in die Zukunft, zu befrdern. Doch ist mit dieser trivialen Definition die Frage nach der Funktion bei weitem nicht beantwortet.
