Today in most African universities a tradition has emerged that uses a combination of course work assessment and end of semester examinations as a means of assessing student achievement. This stems partly from the fact that many of the techniques and procedure used in assessing student learning are rather technical and most teachers and lectures are often not knowledgeable about such matters.
