Die Sektion Klinische Geriatrie der Deutschen Gesellschaft fiir Gerontologie hatte im Oktober 1983 Wissenschaftler aus neun Landern zu einem Symposium unter dem Thema 'Therapie im Alter' eingelad n. Die medizinischen Bediirfnisse der alteren Generation sind sehr groB und vielfaltig. Leider wird die Geriatrie bei der Ausbildung der Medizinstudenten nur in unzureichendem MaBe beriicksichtigt. Grundlagen geron tologischer Forschung und praktische Geriatrie sind Themenbereiche, die man in vielen Lehrbiichern der Medizin vergeblich sucht oder die nur am Rande gestreift werden. 1m vorIiegenden Buch sind die Vortrage des Symposiums 'Therapie im Alter' zusam mengefaBt. 1m ersten Abschnitt werden grundlegende Probleme jeder Therapie im Alter dargelegt. Fragen der Pharmakokinetik und Pharmakotherapie sowie Richtlinien bei der Behandlung mit haufig angewandten Stoffgruppen wie herzwirksame Glykosi de, Betablocker, Kalziumantagonisten und vasoaktive Substanzen werden besprochen. 1m weiteren Veri auf wird auf die Behandlung wichtiger, im Alter auftretender Erkran kungen eingegangen. Die operativen Behandlungsmoglichkeiten alterer Patienten wer den in speziellen Kapiteln abgehandelt.
