It took Harland & Wolff four years to construct the mighty White Star liner Titanic at the Belfast shipyard. The single most important man in the massive operation was Thomas Andrews, the youthful chief designer and managing director of the company. It was Andrews, on board Titanic on her maiden voyage in April 1912, who first realised that the damage caused by the iceberg was fatal. His calm, practical manner did much to control panic, and many of the survivors owed their lives to him. He went down with the ship, deeply mourned by family, friends and coworkers, and by the people of Ireland. This facsimile edition of the biography published soon after the disaster provides compelling insights into the personality and times of Thomas Andrews, as well as information about shipbuilding in the heyday of the great liners.
