Seine Helden sind 'elitre Geistesmenschen', die sich ber die Aussichtslosigkeit ihrer Bemhungen keiner Illusionen hingeben und ihren schicksalhaften menschlichen, beruflichen bzw. politischen Verstrickungen letztendlich auch nicht entgehen knnen. Es ergibt sich nun die Frage, ob hinter diesen ewig gleichen Figuren Bernhard selbst und eine kohrente Philosophie steckt oder ob er aus Opportunismus einen einmal erfolgreichen Charakterentwurf perpetuiert. Der Autor kommt zur Auffassung, dass diese Charaktere die Befindlichkeiten Bernhards sehr genau widerspiegeln, jedoch als Reprsentanten allgemein gltiger, philosophisch untermauerter Lebensentwrfe weder gesehen werden wollen noch brauchbar erscheinen. Den Vorwurf des Opportunismus kann man Bernhard dennoch nicht machen. Er hat sich allen Versuchen, sich politisch vereinnahmen zu lassen, stets entzogen und seine Kritik gleichmig auf alle politischen Lager verteilt.
